Baby hates being held. Reason for concern?

I have a question for you moms. I just don't know if I have cause for concern or not. I have a 5 and a half month old son. He is a happy baby. He laughs and watches his family. But he doesn't like to be held. He likes to sit on your lap. He likes to be walked around with if he's in an upright position. But hates to be cradled in your arms. He instantly starts squirming and fussing and won't look at your face. I just want to see if any other moms have had this and if it should be something if concern for me. I can't even hold him while he is eating. He wants to lay down to eat. What are your thoughts or experiences?

my son did the same thing at about 4 months almost like he was to grown up to be held like a baby. I was always told it was a phase in life and that he just was wanting to see the world so i would say it is normal but the laying down to eat be sure to have him propped up on something because it could cause ear infections if baby is laying flat on their back eating so i would kinda keep an eye on that we always put him in his boppy pillow and fed him that way he wasn't being held but still was propped up just a suggestion.

Thanks so much everyone. Yes he plays and sleeps great laying on his back. I had him at a physiotherapist appointment today (he had a tight ligament in his neck which is good now, just a check up appointment) and she said he seems perfectly normal. Just an independent little guy. I just love holding and cuddling him, but I guess he thinks his mom is already cramping his style. Lol. My daughter was a snuggle bug so this is just night and day different for me. Thanks again so much ladies! You all helped put my mind at ease.

Oh thank you. I didn't realize it could cause ear infections. Good to know.

my youngest son and daughter both preferred to explore rather than be held. They much preferred rolling around on the floor than being in someones arms. though they would sit on my lap if there was something interesting to look at.

Is he comfortable laying flat to go to sleep? If not, then I might be concerned about some type of colic or acid reflux, like he was uncomfortable. But if he is okay sleeping and playing laying down it may just be his personal preference?
