My 7 week old is having solid bowel movements. He struggles with it and cries. At first the doctor had me add an ounce of prune juice to his bottle. He is still having solid. So now they said give him a 3 oz juice bottle (apple juice) every other day. His first bottle he threw up (he is also having reflux issues). The dr does not want to change formula - said that makes things worse. I wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this and hear what you have done. I feel so bad for him and not so sure the juice is the answer especially when he is having relux issues.

have you heard of "open gut " prior to age 6 months in babies? thats a big problem.any food or drink goes straight to the blood stream bc their cells in gut are "open" and dont decipher what they need or dont need. some say that this is leading to gut and psychology syndrome. dunno but here is a link about open gut http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids... ~~the biggest thing i would suggest is to start probiotics. formula changes the bacteria growth in a babys gut and encourages bad bacteria to flourish leaving you with a lot of issues in the way of poo issues and diaper rashes and thrush etc. and not to mention if you had baby by csection then they dont get the beneficial bacteria as they comewn vaginal canal..~~ "natures way" has great probiotics which contain infantis bifidobacterium for the infant gut. if it is the higher bacteria count that you buy (20 billion or higher) then just give 1/2 capsule a day to babe. heres a GREAT link to read up on. http://bodyecology.com/articles/introduc... ...the other thing is that formulas are made from cows milk which is REALLY hard for most babies to digest the protiens which is why most breastfeeding mothers have to stop eating dairy until baby is about 3-4 months old and the gut is advanced. so perhaps you could entertain making your own formula for baby from goats milk which is closest to human milk. not to mention that if you make it you are omitting the junk they put in and the BPA that the can is lined with.... here is a link for that (which you can also find the recipe in a book called nourishing traditions by sally fallon) .http://www.realmilk.com/formularecipes.h... good luck to you. i hope you figure out what works

Soy formula was hard on my son,he was on it from 3 months-6.5 months and then i took him off of it,i would switch formula's. Juice really helps mine go, but when he gets to the point where he is in alot of pain i dont hesitate too use stool softner.

just keep an eye on his weight as long as he's eating regularly and gaining weight i don't see a problem with it. It's not like he's got teeth to rot yet and chances are by the time he does have teeth you'll have been able to stop the juice. You other option is a stool softener but I'd choose juice over medication personally.I hope the juice keeps working!

I would try Similac Gentlease formula if you're going to switch. Also, try putting a teaspoon of light karo syrup in his formula, this should help with the hard stool.

It sounds like his colon is pulling to much water out. When this happened to my little one I was told to use dark karyo syrup to some water. I was also instructed to give him this at least 2 oz a day. This was given to me from a GI specialist because the pain was causing him not to poop. It help a lot! If this doesn't help your little one seek a GI specialist like I did.

LOL I know what you mean. We started him out on Parent's Choice Gentle because my 16 month old had to go to that and my 16 year old had to do soy when she was an infant so Ithought I would play it safe and just started this one out on the Gentle. BUt he kept throwing up bad it was like he was throwing up the enire bottle. So I figured try the soy. He stopped throwing up but still had the solid bms which he had with the first formula also. He finally went to the bathroom and it was mushy but I just wonder if giving 3oz of juice every day is good for him? Well I do an ounce of water and the rest juice.

lol the reason i ask is because my doctor is in probably her late fifties and is not up to date on anything so she often gives me information that was current when i was born but certainly isn't now. http://www.parentschoiceformula.com/defa... From what I can see it's got the same amount of iron in every formula. is there any particular reason you went with soy based like a sensitivity or something?

I have him on Parent's Choice Soy based. I would say the doctor is in her 40s. I am thinking of just trying another formula.

is he on a high iron formula? because iron is constipating. And you're right some people do have to go through several different formulas to find the right one. The problem is that sometimes it will get worse before it gets better especially with the reflux. If he's on an extra high iron formula maybe try switching to one with less, and possibly one that's formulated for sensitive stomachs. see if it helps. How old is your doctor just out of curiosity?

Thanks for the tips. I thought switching formula but dr said "no that makes things worse" which I thought was weird because I have heard of people having to go through sometimes five formulas until they found the right one. And when the dr said 3oz juice every day I didn't know if that was good for the baby but she said it's ok for a baby having issues.

Pharmasists have stool softners behind the counter if you feel juice and everything else isnt working. i only use stool softner when absolotute necessary, otherwise he has pear juice, apple juice or apple and prune mixed. and it useally helps keep him regular.

My kids went through this. They were both on prevacid 2x a day until about 8 months old, and had to drink Similac Alimentum formula for protein sensitivities found in regular formula and my BM. If he is puking up the apple juice, try sitting him up at a reclined position.
