Baby won't nap in crib during the day, but has no problem at night

My son is 9 weeks old. From day one, he has done very well sleeping in his crib at night. During the day, he will only nap in his swing though (or his carseat if we are running errands). Everytime I try to put him in his crib, all he does is fuss and cry. I have tried to leave him when he does this and see if he will tire himself out, but after half an hour, he shows no signs of letting down. I try to put him in his crib when he shows signs that he is tired, but that doesn't help. Does anyone have any tips/ideas on how to get him to nap in his crib???

Eleisha, thanks for the thoughts. I think that will be my next line of action, to get room darkening curtains. The room he sleeps in is fairly dark, but maybe just not enough.

Gemika, thanks for you suggestion. I already do those things though, and even if he stays sleeping when I put him down, he will wake up within 30 minutes, tops...not quite the 2-3 hour nap I hope for :-)

Oh and by the way, crying in infants peaks at 6-7 weeks so don't expect too much of him at this time :)

Get him to sleep in your arms or at the breast and then hold him close to you and slowly (dont rush it now!) ease him down onto the crib. Pause a moment so he feels the pressure of your skin against his. When his hands relax and he is breathing steadily, slowly ease away. :D

My daughter was exactly the same. As a newborn she slept wonderfully both night and day, however at about 6 weeks day sleeps became non existent. I made the following changes. I changed her curtains to really dark ones to block out ALL light. Put on white noise really loud - like full blast (you can get CD's but i just put it on the radio station that doesnt work). I also swaddled her to stop her from moving - she is a ver active little girl. Ittook only a couple of days for her to work out is was sleep time, and now she sleeps for two hours at a time 3 times a day!!! Let me know how you go. :)
