Boyfriend parenting his children

I've been dating my boyfriend for a year and I've been seeing a slow decline in his parenting. From what I understand, he used to take them out on outings and play with them quite often in the past, but over the past five or six months that has slowly declined. I'm noticing that he yells at them quite often and rarely ever plays with them. Typically during the days that he has the children, he sits on the couch and watches TV and plays on his phone While the kids run around like crazy feral animals Haha. I have had a lot of experience with children of all ages and have developed a really positive relationship with all of his children. It is gotten to the point where they often come to me for help or advice, and it seems as if he's feeling depressed or not happy about this but has not said anything to me. I feel like I ask him quite often to play with them and take them out but it's rare that he ever does this. I told him the other day that if he doesn't start playing with them or taking them out more often to do activities I'm worried that the children will start to resent him and not want to come over to our house. Over the past three or four months I've noticed that his children are saying things that make me think that they don't want to be here. They'll say things like "one more sleep until I go back to mommies house." And his youngest daughter will typically cry every time she's dropped off at our house. I'm not sure if he just doesn't know how to play with them or that he just doesn't want to do and it's very difficult to get a straight answer out of him. I know that he is very stressed out right now because of work and other issues that are happening in his life which I feel could be contributing to this lack of parenting. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Sometimes I feel like saying to him "why do you even have the kids you don't even play with them or act like you like them ," but I know that he would shut down or get really upset with me if I said that. Any help on this topic would be wonderful thank you.
