My 2 year old son is very cautious . When I take him to the park he won't go on any of the equipment except the swings. I have tried encouraging him to try new things but he is just not interested. We even got him a sliding board for the back yard and he won't go down it at all. There are babies climbing up ladders and going down the slides and here is my son just running around the park . He used to be really afraid of people but now he is a lot better around people and other kids which is good. Does anyone have this same issue with their child or can offer some advice?

My son is the same way. At home he's running all over the place, practically climbing up the walls. Yet when I take him to the park I have to hold his hand in order to get him to go down the slide or climb up the stairs. I agree with Myra to keep encouraging him to do things. And when he does it make a HUGE deal about it. Some children are just more cautious than others. There's no reason behind, but know that you definitely arent alone!

My son was the same way but would gladly do anything that myself or my husband would do....so you can imagine how many times we made fools of ourselves just to make our son happy and get him to try things. On the other hand he has totally outgrown that at 3.5 years and now we are yelling NO DONT DO THAT all the time.

IMO, the best thing you can do is continue encouraging him. Let him know you are there to catch him if he falls.

But some kids are just slow to try things, and that's OK, too. If he's happy just running around, let him run around. In time, he will be willing to try the playground toys. Pushing that goes beyond encouragement can be far more harmful than good. If the playground toys are big enough that you can play on them, too, give that a try. My 22mo old is much more interested in doing the things I do, so I end up doing a lot of things that make me feel really stupid because my childhood has been long since packed away. But it really is fun to do those things again.
