My 18 month old is coming down with croup. What can I do to help her and stay out of the emergency room? Are there any homeopathic remedies that help?

You bet! Go in the bathroom with her and turn on the shower as hot as it can be (don't get in it of course), and let the room fill with steam, so don't turn the exhaust vent on. Breathe the hot steamy air for as long as the two of you can stand it, or open the door, take a break and go back in. The steam will definitely help!
Use a humidifier during the night, and try to have it venting near the child if possible.
If she is particularly congested, lay her on your lap face down and head away from you. Her head should be lying slightly lower than the rest of her body. With a blanket over her back, pat her upper back firmly with your hand. This should be done firmly (almost hard) and rhythmically, but of course, not hurting her. This vibration will help loosen the congestion in her lungs.
Above all, if she exhibits ANY kind of trouble breathing (wheezing, shortness of breath etc.) GO to the dr. Just because you go to the ER doesn't mean she'll be given any medications (IF that's your concern). You can go to have chest x-rays, have them listen to her lungs, or to simply be monitored 'just in case'.
I'm all for home remedy, BUT don't be stubborn about going to the dr. :)
Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon :)

When my little guy got croup they recommended the steam alternated with taking him out into the cool night air. He was sick in the winter though, so depending on where you are it might not be getting very cool at night! There was definitely a noticeable improvement in his breathing after he'd been outside.

Anytime hon! I hope she gets over it quick. P.S. - I didn't intend to say you didn't like the dr. or anything like that - sorry about that. Sometimes I can be a bit forward. LOL.

thanks Cindy. I will definitely take your advice. Im not opposed to going to the doctor or medication, I just dont want her to get so sick we have to take her. My older daughter never had croup and I really appreciate the help.
