Do any of you moms do Medical Transcription or Billing/Coding from home?

I'm just curious how many moms are out there that do Medical Transcription from home? I've just started the training for it so I'm not working yet, but I'm treating my studying time like my "working time" (5-7am and 8-10pm roughly). I also saw an ad in today's mail for doing Medical Billing from home. I was under the impression that billing/coding was strictly an "in office" job. Does anybody know if I was wrong? I am really enjoying my courses, and looking forward to adding to the family income!

Stephanie, the training I am doing is completely online. Then when I start working for a transcription company, what Kelly posted immediately beneath you is exactly the way I understand it--the MP3 files are sent to you over the internet. You do the transcripting, then send the files back. So you can live/be anywhere in the US and work for any doctor/clinic/hospital anywhere in the US. My mom is considering doing this in Canada, but I don't know exactly how that works there.

I am doing my training through CareerStep (career step.com) and if you want to do this, I highly highly recommend them. I have a friend who used them as well, and she feels the same way. Talking to an advisor from CareerStep answered a lot of my questions and helped me understand it very well. Check them out if you're interested!

A lot of the mom's around here do it from home. I don't, but a lot of my neighbors are doctors who employ them.

The way it works is the doctors' office will purchase secure transfer software and "email" dictation to the transcriptionist. She then does the transcription and sends the document back through the secure software.

These moms are not actual employees of the doctors' offices--they are contracted out, so they are paid by job, not salary, and do not get benefits or paid time off. Doctors like the set up because it saves them a lot of money in office space, and they don't often need a transcriptionist full time, so they only pay for what they need. Most of the moms I know work for several doctors at once. I don't know much about how they get hired, most know each other from word of mouth and such, I think. Just talk to the doctors you know and ask them who does their transcription.
