We recieved an American Red Cross ear thermometer for our baby shower, it does NOT work. The temperature reads way off...

We are looking into gettin a new thermometer, but wondering everyone's opinion - do you like the ear or forhead thermometers better?

My mom has always used an ear thermometer and it worked fine, we just need to find a good brand if we buy that type again...

Let me know (and if you have one and it works well, what brand!)

Thanks!

I have always preferred an ear thermometer. Have been told by a nurse that you get a more accurate reading with an ear thermometer versus forehead, also.

My pediatrician has told me that the forehead ones don't work well and the temp is not accurate.

When it comes to babies, Rectal gives the most accurate temperature. Neither ear nor forehead is as helpful as auxillary or rectal. I believe with auxillary, you have to increase the reading by one degree. When it comes to your baby's health, you dont want to have to rely on the 2 most inaccurate ways to read temperature.

you should ask someone who uses them mutiple times a day...your kids pediatrician will give you the best and most accurate answer..

I have never had luck with ear thermometers. I used a regular digital thermometer rectally for my kids when they were babies. That is the most accurate reading. When I worked daycare we used a digital thermometer under the arm which works well enough, but you have to remember to add 1 degree to the temp.

Well if it's for the entire family I would buy an ear thermometer. If it's mainly for the baby then I would get one that could be used as a rectal thermometer. I just would not buy one of those glass thermometer cause you never know when someone's gonna accidentally break it. I remember that my mom had one and when I was shaking it for some reason (might have been wet or something) and it broke right in my hand. So ouch avoid this. Well good luck!
