My daughter sucked her thumb constantly, to the point where she had a huge welt on her thumb. When she was 3, I was painting my nails, and she wanted me to paint hers too. So I told her that if she wanted her nails painted, that she cannot suck her thumb anymore or she will get sick from the nail polish, it will give her a tummy ach. I wasn't even trying to get her to stop, I just happened to say that. And, it worked. After I painted her nails, her thumb never went in her mouth again. She is 4 now, and hasnt sucked her thumb since.

its hard to tell kids to stop habbits even if its bad for them. we have habbits we can't break weather its nail biting or smoking or eating or any thing we do that we have been accustomed to for long periods of time. i just hope that if i persistantly tell her its nasty and keep her buzy she will just stop........think it will work?

I asked the doc n he pretty much said th same thing. He said she's doing it for comfort and i shouldn't forcibly try to stop her. According to him sh ll get over it in her own way and in her own time. But others i meet tell me i should get her to stop. Also I m worried about her teeth.

Is there something that she really wants? That might work.

Otherwise there is just constant redirection. Removing her hand from her mouth and having her do something else. Don't talk about it too much, just keep pulling those fingers back out.

Do you or your husband bite your nails? She may just be copying and you both have a habit to quit. Just a thought. Good luck.

My daughter sucked the same two fingers (upside down). She had an accident going up the stairs and actually cut her tongue when she was a year old. This caused her to stop sucking. She couldn't even suck her bottle anymore - too painful. If this didn't happen, not sure what would have been done. My son has sucked his thumb forever. He is now 7 1/2 and just stopped on his own. It slowed down to just thumbsucking at night, but he loved it and there was nothing I could do to stop it. It didn't bother me, but now I'm sorta glad he decided to stop. Someone told him he'd need braces on his teeth and they hurt to be put on, that's what made him decide to stop.

I also sucked my thumb when I was little, my parents promised to buy me a bike if I stopped, so I did. I was about 6. Putting "stuff" on their thumb won't stop them, just make them cranky until it wears off.

I need help getting my two year old DD to stop sucking her thumb! My family says to put hot sauce or nail biting polish on her thumb nail nails to get her to stop. I don't know if it will work, and I'm not sure I want to do it that way. Maybe I'm being too soft.

my daughters 3 1/2. She sucks her index finger n I cant get her to stop either. I remind her whenever i see her but she also does it in her sleep. My sister suggested applying something bitter on her finger, like coffee. M gonna try that soon.
