Getting her to play by herself?

My daughter won't play independently. We put her in her room surrounded by her buckets of toys and she REFUSES to play with them unless we're in the room with her. Even we're right next to her room in the living room she will just come by the gate and scream and cry. Any suggestions on what I could do to get her to play by herself?

Have another baby, then she'll have a playmate. :) Oh you wanted a serious response!!!

She's young, she really doesn't know how to play with her toys. Play with her, then play next to her, then play in the same room then once she starts becoming engaged with her toys, you'll be better able to leave the room and she won't even know you're gone.

Bring some toys into the living room, she wants to be near you. If that is your daughter in the picture, she doesn't even look a year old, there is no need for her to be in her room all by herself at this age. When she gets older she will probably head into the room on her own.

We have a 20 month old, she spends a little time in her room, of her own accord but usually will play around us while we are in the living room or in the kitchen. We keep some toys accessible in the living room and a couple in our bedroom for when we are cleaning up in there etc if she wants to be around us. There is also a cupboard full of plastic bowls, containers and other safe objects that she can pull out and play with.

I feel that she will play on her own in her room or away from me when she is ready.
