Babies have to learn how to drink, they learn to hold the liquid in their mouths while they swallow. When you drink, you take a mouthful, then take 2 or 3 swallows to swallow it down, while holding it in your mouth. Until a baby learns to do this the liquid will just spill out of their mouth. My baby is unable to suck on a bottle and we tried every type of cup under the sun from 4 months old. But it wasn't until he was nearly 7 months that he just got the hang of it one day, I think he needed to be big enough to manage the flow and figure out how to drink. It is definately worth trying a few different cups. Also, if your baby takes a bottle, there is nothing wrong with continuing with the bottle for many more months and transitioning to a cup later. At even 8 or 9 months you will notice a difference in how much more easily they can learn to drink and personally I dont see a problem with waiting until 12 months.

my daughters 6 1/2 months and i want to get her on a beaker soon...ive tried it once or twice with her but she just dont understand it... do they sell beakers with a soft sippy on it so its more like a bottle so its not so big of a change for the baby? my daughter just dont get how to suck it if its not like a bottle teat.

im guessing you mean a cup?? sorry beaker was throwing me at first.. well i thik i would still use slow flow that way hes not choking on it or struggling, he'll get it eventually.. you could put half water/apple juice.. he prob will chomp on it for a while as he may be teething
