At that age they might not have the concept of who is mom, and who is not. Do you call her mother by her name, and does she call you mom? If so, the child will emulate that. My son called me mommy and my mom, his grandma momma, because it is what he heard her called by her children.

I babysit lots of little kids, they all call me mom or a variation of that, and they have normal, healthy families.

Sometimes it is hard for mothers to bond with their children, and with such a close support group ready to step in she might just have fallen into a rut where she knows you will take charge and be the parent. Have you had a discussion with her about it?
