Why is knowing the truth about Santa, et al, considered 'growing up too fast'?

I don't think it's growing up too fast ( I found out about Santa and the tooth fairy in kindergarten) but we decided to encourage Santa for a couple of reasons. The innocence of childhood is one of the many things I love and wish could be preserved a little longer. Also, we believe that Santa gives children a basis of faith. Of course some people have tried to argue with me that the disappointment of finding out he's not real destroys their faith, but I think that when kids find out Santa isn't real they remember what it's like to believe in something because you believe in it. Isn't that what having faith is all about?

I have no idea why it's considered growing up too fast. I don't tell my daughter that there is a real santa claus because we just never believed that as kids. Plus, my husband and i talked about it and we just don't feel we should lie to them about it. I also don't have extra money to perpetuate the myths. you lost a tooth - yay! you're gonna have a big tooth there now! no reason to shell out money. we're on a tight budget as it is. although my daughter is three years old and has two imaginary friends, plus she tells me mickey mouse comes over to play sometimes and help her put her puzzles together. When asked at christmas what santa brought her she looked at people like, "what are you talking about?". she thinks santa is just a cartoon.

It seems to me that learning the heartbreak of Mommy and Daddy lying would make them grow up too fast. My children are fine, and they always knew that Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and others were just stories that other parents told.
