My son is 5 and has been potty trained for a couple years now. Recently he has started to poop his pants. He says he tries to hold it but can't. It's not diarhea so I know he knows when it is coming. Any ideas on why this could be happening? It started about 4 weeks ago and nothing is different in our lives. What is the proper way to handle it? Do I punish him? Thank you!!!!

Hi, Jeanette. I know your post is from 2009 but I am having the same problem with my 5 year old son. I am thinking it is laziness also. How did you end up correcting this? I am so frustrated right now I don't know what to do. I have an appointment with his pediatrician next week to discuss.

There really hasn't been any changes in his life. I am thinking now it could be a laziness thing. Would rather keep playing rather then going to the bathroom.

He is not in school. Nothing has changed for him recently. I have noticed it is when he is busy playing most of the time. I wonder if he is doing it because he doesn't want to leave the fun. Thanks for your thoughts!

Do NOT punish him. More than likely its related to stress. Is he in school, is everything going ok at school? Is his sleeping routine different (sleeping any more/less)?

Just be patient with him, instead of getting upset with him, reward him for the times he does use the toilet.
