I think my son was about 8 or 9 months when I really started feeding him finger foods. Gerber has a good line of "first foods" to get started. Also, things like Cheerios and Goldfish crackers are good to give them too. Just offer a few of whatever you're giving to him with his bottle or other jarred baby food. I also like the web site babycenter.com. They have lots of information on all the nutrition stuff!

I'm not familiar with formula feeding but I know with breast feeding that you want to always offer the breast first before solids. As far as finger foods, you want high calorie foods like avocado. You can also give pretty much any table food that is not a choking hazard (ask about them but they are basically anything hard or sticky).

As long as he is getting his recommended formula he can fill up on finger foods. If you give him finger foods and he wants more you can give him more of that or give him more formula. You just want to make sure that what you are giving him is healthy.

I started my son on finger foods at 8 months. We stared with cheerios, broken in half. He wouldn't feed them to himself at first but loved them. We then moved on to puffs, banana pancakes, banana, steamed veggies, avocado, other soft foods. He was still getting about 30 ounces of formula a day. A jar of veggie and a jar of fruit a day as well.
