I wash only in cold because I'm afraid of my clothes shrinking. My husband likes the whites washed in hot thought. (helps with stains I guess)

Detergent does not kill germs. If you are not using hot water and are concerned about germs, you should use bleach or an oxygen cleaner to sanitize.

I wash all my clothes in cold (except towels I wash hot, I guess i feel like since they get wet and often at my house sit on the bathroom floor, they could use the extra "germ killing") this saves energy and eliminates the need to separate clothes. :-)))

I have never ever washed my clothes, towels or linen in hot water. Over here in Oz the temperatures are a lot different. We are all encouraged to use cold water to wash, as it takes more energy to heat the water. I put all my items to dry on a clothes line, so apart from saving electricity and energy, they dry naturally and the sun is a natural bacterial killer.

I wash my clothss in cold so they shrink less. I wash our towels and kids clothes in hot because I have heard, hot water will kill the germs. If I had to use cold with my kids clothes I think I would also us color safe bleach as well as detergant to kill the germs. If you place a freshly stained outfit in a sink full of cold water, it will help bring the stain out of the fabric also.

I know there are detergents that claim to work just as well in cold water, so if you're going to wash in cold water, I would probably look into those. But the problem is that if you live in an area with a cold climate, the tap water is probably too cold to get your clothes clean, even with the special detergent. "Cold" water has to be at least 60 degrees to clean properly. I know where I used to live (in the southern US), this was almost never an issue. But now I live in Michigan, and our tap water is around 40 degrees for most of the year!

Maybe try washing in warm, which will mix hot and cold water? And I do think it's important to wash underwear, socks, etc. in hot water to effectively clean out bacteria that grows in those items.

I also wash most loads in cold...I add bleach to towels as they tend to hold onto damp odor otherwise....I add Oxy Clean powder to all loads except jeans...helps to further clean out stains treated with shout or missed.....Hot water will set a stain....Only use warm or hot when washing sheets on which accidents have occured....

actually, i use hot water for white clothes i.e.towels,blankets,sheets and underwears. then i use cold water for anything else, cause coulered clothes lose its colour in hot water.

I have always washed in COLD, my mom does too. Saves lots of $$ and it keeps your clothes in better condition for longer.

I have always washed in cold, so does my mum and our clothes are perfectly clean! Plus I have heard that hot makes some stains "set" so they never wash out, I know blood sets in hot water you have to soak it in cold.

I wash all my clothes in cold. It saves us a ton on our power bill and it's just as good. The only time i wash in warm, and neevr hot, is if someone is sick adn something needs to be treated with better care to insure the sickness is all gone. Other then that everyone in my family and everyone in my husbands family wash in cold. Even my friends:)
