how can i get my on to sleep better at night

until about 2 or 3 months it's hard to get them in any kind of predictable sleep pattern. I would start by #1 making sure baby has a full belly and clean diaper before you lay him down (obvious I know) #2 allow some light into the room during daytime naps (sheer curtains) and make sure it is dark and quiet at night this helps keep him from getting his days and night mixed up which happened to my son and thats what fixed it #3 always put them to sleep in their crib or bassinet or wherever you want them to sleep at night. If they fall asleep in your arms do your best to lay them down so they always wake up in the crib. this helps them get used to their crib or bassinet and they sleep better. when we let my son sleep wherever he wanted during the day he would refuse to sleep in his crib at night now he knows what the crib is for and actual sleeps better in it. it may not work at first but keep at it may take a week or two. we did these things and my son started sleeping thru the night at 2 1/2 months. i wish we started following these "rules" earlier! good luck

Ok thanks Megan.

At 1 month old, there is nothing you should try to do to get your baby to sleep better. You should bare with it and try to nap whenever you get the chance. I post a lot on sleep methods and there is not a single method in behaviourism or psychology that you should use on a 1 month old.

Most babies drop one night feed and start to sleep a 5 hour stretch, usually between midnight and 5am, by 12 weeks of age (add extra weeks if baby was premmie).

By 4 months most babies are only feeding once per night. By 6 months 75% of babies no longer need to be fed and sleep an 11 hour stretch.

You need to let nature take its course and give your baby half a chance to develop a sleeping pattern on his own. He has only been out in the world for 5 weeks.

I can help you but I need to know how old your baby is and how many times he currently wakes during the night.

Your baby is only a month old so it may be a little while. my daughter slept through the night from 2 months on, my son started at 2 1/2 and is now 4 1/2 months old. at 3 1/2 months he decided to start waking up in the middle of the night again.......it does get better though the older they get. You are still at the hard stressful age! Good luck!

The best way to get most chidren to sleep well is to make sure they are held to a very predictable nighttime routine. Seems to help a lot.
