my son is 12 and still has issues with break down but they are getting fewer and farther in between. We established with him a safe place for him to go when he needed to calm himself. He chose his room. When he goes in there angry I'll go in and ask what's wrong. If he doesn't answer I just leave him alone. I'll go back and check again in 10 minutes and see if he's ready to talk yet. if not I give him more time. He can't listen or communicate well when he's in the middle of a melt down, so that's why I wait until he's ready. It seems to help rather than having me "bugging" him when he needs his time. As far as sleep he takes Seroquel before bed to help him.
