My son is the same. He is also four and can get so frustrated that he can sometimes get violent. It is mainly because he really wants to accomplish something and cant quite get it. Sometimes it takes me showing him another aproach to the situation and other times it takes me realising that four is still young and he does have limitations.
Depending on the situation, you may need to remove him from the situation and come back to it looking from a different angel - sometimes they also maybe getting hungry!
All the best!

Try setting him down and talking to him. If he doesn't want to listen have him sit down, until he is ready to listen. Then talk it through with him, tell him why he can't do it and why it is working. He's four so he should undersand most everything you tell him. My daughter is three and that what i do with her it seems to help to just talk to them. Just be patient because the first few times you try it he will probaby get more mad that you are making him set down and settle down.
