How do I get my 18 month old to nap without his pacifier?

He's been sleeping without it at night but won't nap. He used to sleep for 3-4 hrs a day. Now he barely sleeps for an hour. He's only had it in bed for the last several months. We took it away altogether a week ago. It took him a couple nights to sleep right away but during the day he will not nap. I'm at my wits end!!! He wakes up after an hour and is cranky and whiny until bedtime b/c he's so tired. He already has a lovey and a stuffed animal.

Does he only use/need it at nap times? May I ask why it's an issue if he continues to use it only at nap times? It's a comfort thing, so if you don't want him using his Dummy then you'll have to find another comfort item for him to replace it with. Ask him to pick something special out just before nap time to take to bed with him, this may distract him from wanting his Dummy and transfer his attention away from it and onto his 'new' bed buddy.

I "accidentally" lost my kids paci's and asked the to lie down until I found it and it took about a week and they stopped asking after that.
Praise works too. When he does sleep without it make a huge deal out of it.
