How do I get my 3 year old to stop sucking her thumb?

My daughter began sucking her thumb at the age of 2 months and has not stopped yet. I have tried just about everything I can think of that wouldn't hurt her or make me feel like a horrible mom. Nothing has worked. I don't know what to do now because I want her to stop before she really has problems with her teeth. Her dentist has already told me because of the shape of her mouth, she will more than likely have to get braces when she is older. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on the subject! Thanks!!

I have taken care of a lot of children that sucked on fingers, thumbs, and passys and even bottles. I would break them of the habbit at 2 yrs old. To get them to stop I would chase them around the room all silly like, telling them that I am going to get them. They knew that ment that I was going to tickle them until they could hardly stand it. So they would naturally laugh uncontrolablely while they would try to run from me. When kids laugh that hard, they can't suck on anything, so every time they would put it in their mouths I would do it all over again. I would tell them being very silly, over dramatic and exagurated, saying that we don't eat fingers/thumbs ect we eat food! Kids love it when you use your facial expressions and put your body into the exaguration, it captivates them and they can't get enough of it. I repeated that every single time they would have what ever it was in their mouths and it never took longer than 3 months to break them of the habit with nothing but fun and laughter.

when i was younger i sucked my thumb til i was in the first grade...hahaha. when my parents finally decided to put a stop to it they would put socks on my hands. i also had a little miss piggy book about thumb sucking. you can also put something foul tasting on her thumbs. i havent had that problem with my children yet though. all i can say for sure is never punish her for it. just maybe tell her that she is a big girl now and big girls dont suck their thumbs. good luck!
