Hey y'all I'm new to this.

My little guy is 7 months old and he's never had baby cereal. He's also breastfed. I want to start him on it so we can both get a full nights sleep but I don't know how or whether to use breastmilk or water, or how much to start with. any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

If hes already started solids you probably dont need to start with it really runny, id say a bit smoother than the solid hes on now, just because its a grain so his little tummy still has to adjust. Sometimes starting cereal can constipate babys when they first start too, mine had a bit the first few times we acctually got some cereal in him, a bit of watered down apple juice helped alot, just make sure its 100% juice and pasturized, i stay safe and buy the baby juice, although im sure there is some out there thats just as good, and probably cheaper too. And ill say i would be livid if my mom made a parenting call like that without my consent, ill take advice but you had your turn being the mom, now your the grandma, you allow me to make the decisions in my child life and you respect them, sorry if thats rude, im very passionate about others respecting my role as the parent!

Well my son hated rice cereal but loved the single grain oatmeal, and the box will give you the directions on how to mix, you use breastmilk or formula, whatever your child is on, and on occasion you can use water too. At the 1st feeding you generally use 1tbs cereal to 4 or 5 tbsp breastmilk so it is very runny, the idea is gradually increasing the consistancy as your little ones system gets used to solids, and getting them used to eating out of a spoon. Dont count on the full nights sleep just because he gets cereal, a babys good sleep relies on alot more than a full belly. And mine wouldnt take cereal at all at first so he started with 1st stage carrots, or you could choose another 1st stage food. Your son will let you know what he likes. Good luck, this is such a fun learning stage for you and your boy!

Start with really watered down rice cereal if there's a history of allergies in your family. About a tablespoon but he might not even eat all of that. If he does though, offer some more. We have allergies so that's what we did.

However, cereal does not have to be the first option. You can start with pureed veggies or fruit. I always did veg long before fruit though. Fruit is sweeter and veg tends to be a bit bland - so I always made sure veg was a solid and regular part of their diet before introducing fruit.

Also, starting solids does not help them sleep through the night. It may seem like it does but it doesn't. It also depends on ones definition of sleeping through the night. When mine hit 5 hour stretches, they were sleeping through the night. That's pretty standard for most people. Some babies are great sleepers, one of mine started sleeping long stretches fairly early. Some babies are not and prefer to sleep shorter periods more often.

My MIL always tries to do all my kids firsts, it's terrible. Especially when it's peanut butter at 1, egg at 6 months etc. Old people just do not get it. I did rice cereal with my first but stopped and gave him mashed apples and veggies instead after a while. I can't be bothered with cereal with my new baby it will be cutting straight to fruit and veggies.

I agree with you completely I was very upset. Now that I am feeding him solids regularly they think that he needs more so they are giving him sauces and grease on their fingers!! I was so livid when my step dad dipped his finger in the brisket fat and stuck it in my babys mouth I dang near hit him! I think that a babys firsts should always be the parents fun, not someone elses. She took that away from me and I still haven't gotten over it.

Amie-My husband has terrible allergies so that really helped. My mother (disrespectfully) started feeding him food before I even thought about it and she started with bananas. So I didn't really have a choice. But he eats everything so we aren't having any issues there! lol. I was always told that cereal makes them sleep through the night. I'm so surprised to hear that isn't true. Thank you so much! You were a big help!
