how many naps should a 18 mos old take

My son is 18 months and takes one nap a day. He naps around 1 pm until 3 ish. Once and a while he'll snooze a bit more. He goes to bed around 8:30-9 and wakes up at 8:30 or 9 in the morning.

I think a majority of kids transition from 2 naps to 1 nap between 12 and 18 mths. I was told that when one or both naps start getting shorter, or your child has difficulty settling down for one or both naps, it's a sign. There seem to be two schools of thought - gradual transition (where you gradually delay the morning nap by increments, say 1/2 hr every few days until the morning and afternoon nap merge), and cold turkey (where you just give up the morning nap and start the afternoon nap earlier). Most one nap kids seem to nap 2-4 hrs somewhere between 11am - 4pm. My son started waking early from his morning naps, and was a mess by the time of his usual afternoon nap. Since we happened to be visiting out of state family the next week, we decided to go the cold turkey route - we were naturally on the move in the morning, and did an early lunch around 11:30am, and had him down for a nap no later than 1pm. By the time we were home, he had transitioned to one afternoon nap of 2-2.5 hrs, usually 1-3pm. He is 20 mths old, and this schedule is still working for us. During the transition period, if your child is napping poorly, it might help to have an earlier bedtime so he doesn't become overtired. HTH!

I think all babies are different. My daughter is only 12 months but she takes 2 naps a day.She sleeps from 8pm-8am.Around 10 am she takes a one hour nap and then an hour and half- 2 hour afternoon nap usually around 3pm.this works great for her but she is a little younger and is a sleeper! good luck with the naps

At 18months my son was down to 1 nap a day around 11am, and he went to bed at 7pm not waking up until 7-8 am. It really just depends on the child!

It depends at that age all of mine were down to one nap a day but I know a lot of kids that were still taking two at that age. Go by her cues as to wether or not she is tired if she is give her a nap if not then don't

All kids are different, I think it just depends on how they are throughout the day. My daughter is 23 months and I quit giving her naps at about 18 months unless she acts like she needs one. The reason I did this is because we set our kids bedtime at 8pm so we could get some time to ourselves and she would just lay in her crib making noises instead of going to sleep and that made me feel bad so no naps surprisingly worked out well for her. Hope that helps

my daughter takes 1 nap a day right before lunch for about an hour and that does her good until bed time at 9. Once I cut down to 1 nap a day she started sleeping in till about 9am every morning.
