How many words....

My son is 14 soon to be 15 months. i am worried that he's not talking enough for his age. I'm a first time mom so I'm not really sure on how many words that he should know at this age. The only words that he says alot are mama, dada, and baba. once in a while he will say nan but that is pretty much it. Should he know more words or am i just freaking out for no reason. At his year check up the doctor said he was doing fine developmentally but i just feel he should have picked up a few more words since then.

That's about many words my son was saying at that age. He is now almost 2 and a half and is pretty much talking. I wouldn't worry if i were you.

Sounds about right. My son only had about 4-5 words he used regularly at this age and he really didn't say much more than that until around 22-23 months of age. But then suddenly the words came pouring out around that age, within a month he went from saying 8-10 words regularly to 100s and short sentences. I think some kids spend a year-2 years absorbing information and then it suddenly seems to come out of nowhere. So no reasons to be concerned.

My two girls were/are pretty good talkers. I have a 15 month old daughter right now and her vocabulary is far more extensive than my son's was. She says 'up', 'cat', 'duck', 'push', 'mil' (milk), "preee" (pretty), "baaa" (bath), "tee" (tree), 'tier' (tiger) but she doesn't say 'mama' or 'dada' (she use to but hasn't said it in a very, very long time).

My son is like 18 months and says mum, dad, bub, naee, see, fuck and seeyabyebye. That is all.

At that age my daughter was saying "mama", "dada" and "cheese". She added "hi" a month later and literally said nothing else until 21 months when there was a sudden explosion of words. Now at 26 months she speaks in full sentences and we have been told by her speech therapist (yeah, I was also worried about it...lulz) that she is now advanced for her age. It wasn't the speech therapy that did it. She just talked when she decided it was time to talk. Some kids pick it up earlier and more gradually and others just save it all up in their brains for later use. We did make use of sign language. It helped with her frustration and her sign words were some of the first she learned to say when she finally got around to it.

He's just fine. My kids didn't say too many words at that age either, but as soon as they were about to turn 2, their vocab just took off! Just make sure you're using the proper names for things, asking him questions, like do you want the ball, or the car? Just for example. Read to him and just talk to him. He'll pick up the words. When my doctor told us that the kids "should be" saying 10-20 words by the age of 2, I freaked! LOL But they were just fine, and now my 3 yr old has an amazing vocab, everyone tells me "she talks so well for a 3 yr old!" Keep up the good work Mom!
