The right time to take them off formula is when they are eating enough solids to make up the caloric and nutritional difference (aside from the milk with meals). For some, that's 12 months, for others it's as late as 24 months. Whole milk is what is recommended since it has all the fat, and fat is not an enemy of the 1 yr old if they have a balanced diet...even if they are on the bigger size. If the child cannot tolerate milk-based formula, there's a high chance they won't tolerate cow milk too well, so be prepared to need to get a lactose-free milk or soy milk.

Starr was about 14 month old when I started her on milk. She did fine for the first week, and then started having water for poo. We gave it the old college try, and after a week of watery poo when the only change was the formula to milk, I found a soy milk, and she does fine.

You can also try an older formula for 9-24 month olds if yours isn't taking enough calories to stop formula. I give Starr four 8oz bottles of milk (one at each meal, and then one at bedtime), and juice and water with snacks and the rest of the time, so she only has to take in around 500 calories to make up the difference. Since she loves fruits and veggies (plain, no butter or cheese), and doesn't eat junk foods or hardly any meat, it can be tough even now for her to get enough calories and she's almost 22 months old. So, look at yours' diet and that is your best indicator.

my little man is 12 and a half months and I still have almost 3 cans of formula left, gonna start mixing with whole milk and then when the formula is gone I won't be buying any more. He drinks milk just fine out of a sippy too, he loves it so I'm not too worried about weaning off formula.

Formula or breastmilk is recommended until 12 months!

Whole milk is recommened until the age of 2......they need the fat, calcium and protein......that being said, there are other ways to incorporate those things into their diet!

My daughter is allergic to cow's milk and refused almost every alternative we tried.....I use goat's milk to make her smoothies or to cook with but she only drinks water throughout the day from a sippy cup!

I asked my Health Visitor about this last week as my daughter turned 1 last Friday. She told me to move her straight onto whole milk without weaning her from one to the other.I started her on her first birthday and she took to it straight away. She has not been sick from it.Good luck!

Both my girls were between 11 & 12 months when I took formula and bottles. Went straight to whole milk. My oldest daughter was fine with it, but my youngest barfs it back up so I give her PediaSure every day instead of milk. Im thinking of trying some kind of soy milk though for her. But yea, no bottles after 12 months here.

My Dr said to start a few weeks before they turn 1. First, lets say she is drinking an 8 oz bottle. Mix 6 oz formula with 2 oz of whole milk. Do that for several days. If she doesn't have any reaction, such as vomiting, constipation, or diahrea, then go to a mix of 4 oz each. Then, go to 6 oz milk and 2 oz formula. Last, all milk. That should gradually get her belly used to it. Hope this helps. Good luck!

My son was taken off formula when he was 9 months old by the Dr becasue he couldn't' stomach it. He was on whole milk from then until he was 2yrs old which is when they should stop the whole milk and drink what you drink. My 8 months old daughter is still on her formula and we don't' plan on changing her to milk until 1yr because she is fine:) Our son is now 2.5 and drinks 1% milk like we do.

I started substituting a few formula feedings everyday with wholemilk when my daughter was 9-10 monhs old. She was completely on whole milk by 11 months. Do not use anything besides whole milk because these little ones still need the fat contained in it. Funny thing is now the entire household drinks whole milk lol.

I nursed my daughter until she was about 11 1/2 months or so. I gradually started her on Whole Milk. She was offically on Whole Milk by her first birthday. It is suggested that babies have Whole Milk until the age of 2.

Hopet his helps a bit.

Also they say you shouldnt just give them the milk...you mix it with the formula for a few weeks. That way their belly doesnt get upset. I would call her doctor and see how he/she would like you to introduce it. My son was different than my other two because he had milk and soy allergies.

i took my oldest son off of formula right around his 1st birthday. i just decided when i ran out of formula he would go to milk. they do advise that you put your baby on whole milk until they are 2...then they can go to whatever you drink!
