For our son's 1st Birthday we had a BBQ and invited our closest friends and family. We did cake and presents, but most of the time was spent visiting with our guests while our son played.

i think i'll go for simple preparation on that event for my special baby after all he doesn't know yet what's goin' on!.. But just for the sake of family gathering at least we have reason to celebrate..

I agree with Louise, they wont remember or really enjoy it..i learned that from my first son...i went all out and when it came down to it he fell to sleep...so make it just relax

Just don't go mad your baby is to young to remember it! I just had immediate family over for some cake and coffee and that was it. They came with there presents and we had a nice afternoon chatting. My daughter slept through most of it and could not understand why she had so many toys to play with all of sudden. I am sure for her second birthday she will have a say in what she wants party wise.
