I would just take play time as oppurtunity to learn, as another mother said. Many people speak badly of learning cartoons but they worled amazingly with my kids. You can't use them alone but they are a great help. Good luck!!

you didnt say how old your son is. Maybe just maybe you are trying to push him into something he is not developementally ready for

When you play cars with him use that time as learning. Talk about what color the cars are, count the cars, talk about opposites (big/small, short/long). Talk about what letters things start with and what sound they make (c is for makes that k sound). When you play cars talk about where you are going and what you might get there. Simon says is also a fun game you can do that often times makes learning fun. You can say Simon says bring me 5 cars or bring me 3 red cars or 2 big cars. If he likes to run around use that as learning. Make big letters or numbers and place them around the house. Tell him to run to the letter "k". At first you will probably be running with him to help him learn the letters. Making it a race can also be fun. Make pudding and draw numbers or letters in the pudding. Just think of what your son enjoys doing and then make things out of that that would help with learning. Any play thing or kind of play can be turned into a learning tool.

I bought my daughters dvd's from Sams Club which were a series set to music. Each dvd was no longer than 20 minutes. We'd sit in front of the TV and do one lesson a day. I let her go up to the tv and point at the pictures guessing which was the letter they were speaking.
