My oldest daughter attended Headstart, and my 4 yo is in the public preschool (which is includes Headstart where I'm at). I think they're great programs that offer a lot to prepare for Kindergarten. No matter where your kids go, they'll do well if you're involved.

I have taken advantage of the scholarship programs with a couple of my children. Others went to a school that is "government" funded. In Indiana it is called Headstart and throught the ICAP program. See if your state has a preschool for lower income families. They do teach same skills as other preschools, but normally, their class sizes are bigger. A lot of moms volunteer as classroom helpers almost daily here for the Headstart program... :)

In my area some preschools are subsidized by a church and one of the preschools is subsidized by the city (parks and rec) so they are pretty affordable. Right now they are $90 a month for three days a week for 2 1/2 hours long. Look around in your area to see what your city offers, the church offers, and if you have a community college or college nearby sometimes they offer affordable preschool. Also see what offers a sliding scale and/or scholarships.

Good luck.

I had the same problem. We didn't qualify for the free pre-k and the cheapest one I could find in my town was almost 500 a month for part time! So, I bought my own curriculum and did it at home to prepare him for kindergarten.

I agree with jaime. Ask about scholarships. Or try to save up. Good luck.

Some places will give out scholarships. My advice would be to go to the school and ask if there are programs that help pay for tuition. Almost all of them have some sort of assistance program. :)
