Raising children is incredibly challenging, especially if you have to do it alone. Since the reality of your situation is that you have no one nearby for support, you need to rethink how you relate to being your children's 24/7 caregiver.

First, put a schedule in place and do not deviate from it. Homework at X time, dinner at X time, etc. Part of this will be getting the kids in bed at a decent hour so you at least have some quiet alone time to relax at the end of the day, every day.

Second, plan to do things with your kids. If they're home & fighting, it's probably because they're bored. Take everyone to the park to kick around the soccer ball, or go ride bikes. The activity will do you all a world of good.

We have started going for a walk every night after dinner. My kids (11 & 7) love it. It's their favorite time of day.

As for seeing your mates, there's nothing wrong with inviting someone over for dinner. It's cheap and they can help you put the kids to bed and then you get some quality hang out time alone with them.

Bottom line, I truly understand how draining it is to care for children, but remember the big picture. The overwhelming majority of your relationship with your children will be spent with all of you as adults. Treasure these fleeting years of childhood and use them to build a loving, respectful foundation for your future relationship with them.

Best of luck to you!!

Time with adults is very important for stay at home moms like us. Twelve is usually mature enough to be left alone, if you feel their ready go out once a week for a couple hours.
