When he tries to pull your hair, hold his hand back and tell him firm but calm that "we don't pull hair". Maybe you can show him how to use his hands to gently touch your hair instead. They understand more than you think! My daughter started hitting other kids at this age and I did exactly the same. stopped her, told her not to do it and showed a positive behavior instead (like a soft stroke on the head or hug) She got the idea pretty quick, I was surprised. They are just discovering how to use their hands so we got to teach them how to use them nicely...

Tell him it hurts mommy. That's what I tell my 11 month old girl.

Babies are just drawn to things they can pull on and they like to touch things (just ask my cat- the baby has probably used five of his nine lives) so pulling your hair out of his reach is a start.

Put your hair up out of his reach. It could be worse. My son ate my hair. The sad thing is that I didn't notice until it was gnawed off half length on the side I usually held him on. (obviously I don't usually look at the back of my head in a mirror too often). It gave my hairdresser a laugh.

Redirecting him to something else would work too. Maybe get him a doll with longer hair if he likes the feel of hair. It can be a manly doll if you're concerned about a boy with a doll.

My son's 11 now. He doesn't eat hair anymore (that I know of lol) They do know so much more than we think they do. I remember when he was about 9 or 10 months and I was giving him a bath. Usually it was a pretty one sided conversation or he'd just be laughing. One day I asked him where his nose was and he pointed to it. We went all the way down to his toes!!! I was floored. They are sponges. Have fun - they grow up too fast.

Each time he does it, put him down on the ground and say "No, pulling Mummy's hair hurts". He will associate being put down on the ground and getting no attention whenever he pulls hair. He won't like it but will quickly learn!

Being a professional Nanny (and now Mummy) has definitely taught me a few tricks!

Yep, put it totally up. I used to put mine in a bun. I agree with Carol, redirect and just keep moving his hand away from your hair.
