I have a 14 month old who throws tantrums, screaming, hitting, kicking, and biting. What can I do to discipline him in a way that he understands?

When I say no, my son doesn't listen, he just looks at me, shakes his head and says no, and continues to go about doing what he shouldn't be doing.

Distractions DON'T work. If I move him away from the area he shouldn't be in or take the object away, he begins screaming, throws himself on the floor and rolls around. If I pick him up he tries to hit me and bite me.

What can I do to get my 14 month old to understand that tantrums aren't the way to handle his emotions?

Ignore them and walk away. Don't react at all. If you pick him up you are reinforcing the negative behavior.

Sometimes I try to pick him up to keep him from bouncing his head off the floor or to move him to a different room out of respect for my in laws, so that when they're trying to watch tv, he's not on the floor screaming above the tv.
