I have a 3 1/2 year old that will pee in the toilet no problem, he stops what he's doing to go pee in the toilet but when it comes to pooping in the toilet, he won't do it. I've tried everything, I've tried getting him to go when he's ready but all he does is cry when he sits on the toilet. He goes in his room and hides and poops in his underwear....what do I do? Does anyone have any suggestions???

Las summer, being ouside...my 21/2 yr old son would pee out of the fence when playing in the "pool"..but need diaper to poo....I thought.."hey, he will pee" so I tried pulups..and it would work till he had to poo.BOY did hy hubby hate this...he shoudl be poopin on potty..and wuld sit and sit...in bathroom.MAKING him sit on poty..spencer would scream his head off..(it put me back a few months with the peeing.) so , I ttried pullups and he would pee on poty, but insist on diaper to poop..LET HIM!!!!

He woke up 1 morning after xmas and wanted bigboys...

For 3 weeks now, we have had no accidents..either pee OR poo in BIGBOY PANTS!!! He decieded al on his own to go in potty..no more pullups..DRY at night..

It seems he just grew up 1 night!! Good luck to all of you...it WILL happen!

My oldest daughter did this when she was potty training also. She just didn't feel comfortable pooping on the toilet. She would tell me that she needed to go poo and then ask for a pull up. I was just very patient with her and let her do it when she felt more comfortable with it. It took three to four months before she would, but after she did it a couple of times she figured out that it wasn't as scary as she thought and that it was much more comfortable. Sometimes all you can do is support them and remind them about using the potty. Each child will do it when they feel comfortable enough to.

Thanks for the comments, He wears big boy underwear and will stay dry in them but, he does the same thing, asks for a pullup so he can poop... I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem and having the same issues with trying different things to get him to go. thanks again!

I had the same problem with my son, he wasn't scared to poo on the potty he was just stubborn. I tried stickers and a prize after so many stickers and many other things and nothing worked until I got tired of washing poop underwear and told him is he pooped in his underwear then he had to wash them in the sink. It only took like five washes and and he decided it was better to go on the potty. Now if I could just get him to wipe his own butt it would be great :)

I had the same problem with my 3 year old son. He was scared to go poop in the toilet, so he'd sit there and sit there and would be too scared to let it go. Eventually he would get constipated and it'd be even more painful when he actually went. He'll eventually get over it you just have to keep putting him on the toilet and have him sit there until he learns. It, like every other aspect of potty training, takes a lot of time and patience! You can do it!
