There are a few reasons why they say not until 12 months:

1. They're tummies just aren't ready to process cow's milk yet

2. The earlier you give an allergenic food, the more likely they are to be allergic to it when they are older (ex. peanuts-not until 2 years old, strawberries-not until 12 months)

because even though they may not develop an allergy right away, the allergen will store in their body and they could develop it later on even as late as when they are going through puberty. So if you give your baby milk now, he is that much more likely to be lactose-intolerant later on in life.

3. Cow's milk hardly has any vitamins or nutrients in it. Sure, it's a great source of calcium but other nutrition is minimal in milk. Formula has tons of great vitamins and nutrients and was made to supplement what babies don't often get anymore because less moms breastfeed. Formula will make sure that your baby is getting everything he needs because at this age, they are not getting everything they need from their regular diet.

I would call your son's doctor...generally babies aren't supposed to be taking that until they are at least a year old...

Good luck!

My son is 8 months and he is on whole milk only because he has acid reflux so bad that he was not gaining weight and was throwing everything up. Now he is on whole milk, and solids he is doing great and is actually gaining weight! So check with your doctor first

To my understanding in general babies tummies are not ready for whole milk until 12 months or so. I would suggest talking to the doc and see what they say. When we switched our son we mixed in with formula half and half to begin with and then trying 100% milk after a week or so. It can constipate them and give them a tummy ache. Hope this helps.
