Hi all,
I wanted to ask you, what do you think about colouring books/pages ? Do your kids actually like and use them ?
And in your opinion, are those colour books actually useful ? I don't know, developmentally and such.

Well, this question is not so easy as it seems. Lots of things were around for a long time, doesn't mean they are good. Doctors had a hard time believing that washing your hands before delivering a baby is a good idea and can save lives. Look up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignaz_Semm... ,
if you don't believe me.
OK, that was an extreme example. What about our current standardized testing ? Widely criticized ( http://www.ascd.org/publications/educati...'t-Measure-Educational-Quality.aspx ) , many think it doesn't measure important qualities and promotes rote learning for specific test, instead of actually understanding the material. Still in use, because it is convenient and traditional.
There is some evidence colouring is good for kids ( http://colorkid.net/benefits_of_coloring ), but it is far from certain. Well, children tend to colour anything in their immediate vicinity, so at least they can do that while looking at some art and learning about hues and colour names.

Of course colouring books are useful.
I'm also wondering why you are asking. It sounds like you are fishing for responses.

Colouring books can be great for practising fine motor skills, but it is also important to mix it up with encouraging freehand drawing or painting. That way, you are encouraging discovery of a range of artistic abilities.

Um, why would you think or want to know if coloring was negatively impacting your child developmentally? If you don't want them to color, don't buy coloring books.

I think they're great, I have fond memories of coloring and if my kid wants to color all the power to him, better than sitting in front of a tv or an iPad.

I'm not very artistic (seriously I was a hair away from failing art in elementary school) so coloring books are great for me! I don't think I ever used them as a developmental or educational tool for my daughter. It's just a fun thing she does or we do together.

Ok, maybe I came out a bit too strong. What I meant is that tradition is no substitute for evidence.
Love you all:)
