No cough medicine under the age of 6!
Have you taken him to the pediatrician? He might just tell you it is a virus, but if it lasts longer then 7-10 days take him in and dr will prescribe an antibiotic.
How is his cough? Do you know what croup or whooping cough sounds like? If not look it up on youtube or google what does whooping cough sound like.
If he lethargic? If so, I would take him in right away.
Other wise, give him bathes (if he likes bath time) with Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath (it's a green bottle). Helps even me, but it's not strong... weird. You can also turn on the shower real hot to steam up the bathroom, close the door and sit in the bathroom with him for a little while, the stream will help break up the mucous if he is congested and it will help him breath easier.
You could try giving him a little honey, or make a honey, hot water (well, warm water for him) and a tad of lemon juice and have him drink that. The honey will help coat his throat. He is close enough to 2yrs old that he shoudn't have a problem with it... they just say that under 2 can choke on honey, but if it's in a drink like that he should do fine. You can contact his dr first if you prefer.
LOTS OF CUDDLES!! Let the house work go and just cuddle with your little one.

I wouldn't use half doses of cough medicines, there is a lot of recent research which says it does not work and can have side effects.

I agree with raising the mattress, it works quite well, lots of vicks, saline nose drops and a nose bulb if he has a blocked nose (clear it out), a warm honey drink to help with the cough (if it's a dry cough) if he has mucus, give him pineapple juice and try to avoid bananas and dairy for a couple of days. Keep using the humidifier (make sure you sterilise it each day otherwise they can grow harmful mould and bacteria) My daughter had a cold a few months back and I got some homoeopathic drops from the health food store, the brand was brauer, she seemed to sleep better.

Hope he feels better soon.

rub vicks on the bottom of his feet, then cover with thick socks (if he doesn't have any thick ones, use 2 pair) sounds wierd I know, but really works wonders on the cough, especially at night.

Hello, I have done this many of times, take peroxide a tiny bit maybe a tiny drop and put this in the ear, both even. As this will sound like a water tunnel lol to her its OK, after its been in the ear for a bout 5 minutes, turn her head over onto a pillow covered with a towel and let it drain out. Do this in both ears a few times a day and week. It this won't work that day it will for sure that week. Its amazing for colds, sore throat, ear aches, affections, sinus etc. They say this works for cancer as well, they don't use it because they won't make money off of it, sad to say. they would place a drop or so in a liquid and drink, even in a spray bottle and in hale the mist, often Good luck.

Try cutting down on the dairy for a few days. Worked with my kids every time.

Vics on the feet works well. I used to do this with my son...socks on his feet then put in sleepers. I also let him sleep at night in his swing when he was real little. He is now 2 1/2 and I will give him a 1/2 dose of the cough & cold meds for little kids. Pending on his weight is how much you give him (that's what a pharmacist told me "off the record").

If he's having trouble breathing when he lies down, roll up a big blanket and put it under his mattress to lift it up so his head is a bit higher.

Also, if you think his coughing is hurting him or he has a fever, you can give him infant tylenol. If you don't know the dosage, your local hospital should have a nurse advice line that can give you the dosage for his age/weight.

A nice warm bath. You can rub some vicks on his chest or use a vaporizer with some vicks poured into it.
