Joking about giving your child away

Usually when a stranger comments on my toddler I respond with "yeah he's a handful" or jokingly say "would you like to take him?". The last time I said this to an acquaince I ran into at the grocery store he responsed "if you don't want your child why did you have one?" I was surprised and taken aback by this response. Afterwards I was ashamed and embarrassed by what I had said. My son is 2 and he is definitely a handful, but of course I would never give him away. Mommy does need a break now and then though. I have yet to spend a night away from him. Am I a terrible mother for saying such things?

You are not a terrible mother for saying that. My 4 yr old has Autism, adhd and a rare genetic disorder. I say it all the time but would never let anyone else have him

You are most definitely not a terrible mother! I am pretty sure we have all said it at one point in our lives! I definitely have but by no means do I ever truly want to give my child away! I am sure you are a loving and caring mother and you were joking. Don't stress out! Be the great mom you know you are!

No, you're not a terrible Mother. We all say it at times. Some people just don't have a sense of humour and need to stop taking what people say literally.
Don't beat yourself up over it.
