Is anyone currently using the Mirena IUD? If so have you gained weight on it? I had mine put in in October and I have had crazy cravings ever since. I have gained back almost all the baby weight that I had origionally lost by 6 weeks postpartum. Should I have it removed?

Weight gain can definitely be blamed on mirena..... It says it on the box!!!! And the dose of progesterone is actually pretty high, it has to make you body think it pregnant, so you have the insane/intense food craving, the tiredness and lack of energy that you feel when your pregnant.
This of course is different for every one, hormones effect people differently.
Leisel, I think that you may need to read up on the facts and be educated about the product that you had placed inside you

I have the Mirena. I got it put in after I had my 5th son. I tried many of the different BC pills and conceived 3 of my 5 kids while taking the pill. I decided it was time to try something else. I did not notice any weight gain after getting it put in (but I have been heavy since after having my second child). I just started eating healthier and exercising more than chasing the kids around. I have lost 25 pounds since starting in January. I guess I never attributed my weight gain to my BC. I was always on BC since I was 14 unless I was pregnant.

I have the mirena and have had it for about a year and a half and actually weigh less than when I got pregnant so I am not sure about the weight gain but I do have way more cramps than I did before and that is really annoying. Not annoying enough to remove it but still annoying. Good Luck with this though, pregnancy and weight and hormones can be quite puzzling sometimes.

Well the strange thing is that I can't find another reason for the weight gain. I've never never struggled with weight. I limit my calorie intake to no more than 1500 per day and I work out for at least an hour 7 days a week. If I do crave something I limit myself to a very small portion.
Throughout my pregnancy I only gained 11lbs, and I had lost it before I left the hospital. Since then I have gained back the 11, plus like another 8. The IUD is the only thing I can think of. I didn't know that was a major side effect of Mirena. I've heard of a lot of people gaining weight on the Depo shot, but not this.

I am afraid that this is a hard one to blame on the Mirena. Theoretically, the amount of Progesterone that make its way into your system is so small that any it should not have any systemic effects. Please note that I said, theoretically :-) What people experience can often disagree with The Theory!

Weight gain is one of those complex issues and to blame one single thing would be wrong. The Mirena is a fantastic form of contraception and as far as side effects go certainly one of the best. I used it for almost 2 years and loved it and had no hassles. I will definitely have another one after this baby.

So to pose 2 questions:
1. Could there be other causes for the cravings/weight gain that you can address? and
2. If you have the Mirena removed what are your other options, and are they better?

Good luck.

I'm using the mirena and yes I've gained weight.I think it depends on why you are using it,if its just birth control maybe use something else.Everyone I know gained weight but lost it when they stopped using it but talk to your doctor.
