Hello! I am a 20 year old drama performance and musical theatre BA degree student in my final year of university, I am also a training dancer. My friend has a younger brother who has autism and has watched its effects on her family, herself, him and the world around him all of her life. For one of her final university projects she is choreographing and creating an original piece of physical theatre/dance to create awareness of autism by following a child character with autism through a normal day. I will be dancing the role of the Mother which embodies alot of empathy and love. My choreographer has asked me to look at what my character does as a job or is she a stay at home mum, but I want to find out so much more than just that. I have never really witnessed or been around autism so I needed to come to the source which I guess is you guys! I want to make this role believable and give you the justice you deserve through it, so the more help I receive from you about being a mother with a child that has autism; the more I can make people see the role you play in their life. Thankyou!

I have a child with a form of autism (Pervasive Developmental Disorder). I realized when my baby was about two months that something was different. He showed no facial expressions nor eye contact. At the time, I did not want to accept this fact, even though I knew all the signs. My husband didn't want to accept it so I ignored it also. Then I went through a period of self blame. What did I do wrong? After about 1 1/2 we got help because he wasn't talking, or developing the way we thought he should. Early intervention is a great key and help. Contrary to what we were told, my son began articulating some words at three. Doctors told us he may or may not talk until he was five. It's a constant challenge and test of my faith, but I wouldn't trade my child for the world. He is making me a better person.
