It has always been my opinion that until a baby is a year old, if they are crying to eat in the middle of the night, then they need to eat. As long as your baby is a healthy weight, then he must need it. After he is 1, and not getting so much water during the day from either formula or breast milk, then you can try just giving him water at night. I often wake in the middle of the night and need something to drink, so I figure why can't my baby need something too.

Are you waiting to see if he really needs you? Or are you going in right away as soon as he makes a sound? Try waiting and then shush to see if he will go back to sleep. Really, they drop that last feed when they are ready or you force the issue.

It worked for me to jam pack my son with food during the day and a big warm cozy bottle before bed. And then the hardest part is to break the habit of feeding him at night. If you know that he is full of food going to bed, he's probably just looking for that mommy time in the middle of the night. It will be hard but you may have to just be firm and let him cry it out a little at night until he realizes that he doesn't need that midnight meal.
