My 12mo old won't drink from a sippy cup

My 12mo old baby girl will not drink from a sippy cup but she's been drinking from a cup since she was 5mo (as long as someone holds it). She thinks of it more like a toy & chews on it. Any ideas? I've tried everything!

Nuk makes a three in one training pack available at most Walmart stores that has three different sets of nips.1 reg. bottle nip, 2 silicone sippy cup top to get them used to the shape of the sippy cup, 3 top with a silicone straw to show them how to suck from a straw. I found these very handy in training my son who is now 2 yrs old. The transition went very smooth with the aid of these products. Try going to and see if there is a web site for coupons on their products to help find the right one for you and your toddler.

My son wouldn't either, until I found Nuk sippy cups. They are really soft tipped like a bottle. It is a very easy transition. They are at Walmart.

Give her the sippy cup and when she gets thirsty, she will figure it out! Try the soft spouted sippy cups and see if that helps, those are the ones I used to get mine off the bottle. As far as her drinking out of it only when you hold it...she knows you will hold it for her so why should she do it herself! LOL

I found this bottle at babies r us that has handles and goes up to stage three maybe like a transition? my son didnt learn to drink out of a sippy til he was 15 months or something but he could drink out of a straw. she'll learn eventually. good luck!

Hey...I'm with you on this. My son is 11 1/2 months old & chews on his too. I'm breastfeeding right now, but would like to start weaning him. I have 2 older children that were introduced to a sippy at 6 months & neither of them had any problems. I did get him to drink out of a hard one when I took the stopper out...but that kind of defeats the purpose of the whole sippy cup idea.

I would just keep trying different sippys, and eventually she'll find one she likes :) Playtex makes a sippy with a straw in it, those are the only ones my son will use! It took him a while to figure out the straw, but once he did it was all over lol.

Thanks guys. I actually told my baby today that im gonna throw away all her bottes next week so she better learn now! I have 3 different brands 2 soft spout (2 Avent & 1 Gerber) & a 2 hard spout Playtex ones. I tried yesterday to get her to drink from a straw (Gerber Smart Sip Drinks) & she pulled the straw out and threw it LOL! I even tried to wait til she was really hungry & gave her a sippy with formula a couple months ago & all that did was get her upset. I'm just discouraged cuz her doctor has always said she was ahead of herself & he did tell me not to worry about the sippy but I don't want my 12 1/2 month old with a bottle.

Now that she is beyond a year, she doesn't need formula or bm, so you can get rid of the bottles and offer a sippy. Eventually she will drink from it. I tried my son on a hard spout sippy at 6 months, he didn't like it. So I waited until 8 1/2 months to try again with a soft spout sippy and he took it right away and hasn't had a bottle since.

My little girl was never able to drink from a sippy. She was taught by my parents to suck from a straw at 6 months, so she had the take and toss with straw cups that worked great. I also liked this because I didn't have to wean her from a sippy cup later, sit the only weaning was from the bottle and/ pacifiers. At 12 months I took her bottles and pacifiers away and never looked back. She used the straw cups until about 2.5 when she was able to lift the cup correctly without spilling it everywhere.
If your girl can drink from a cup power to her. But if you are looking for a less messy drinking tool, I would just take the time to do straws or try a different sippy. I know my friends girl liked the nubies because they felt more like a bottle. HTH

Which sippies are you trying with her? With my first it took us a lot of trial and error to find the one he liked.
