18 months is old enough to know. They may not understand the whole saying I am sorry part. But they do understand that hitting is wrong. I do day care and start doing time outs at 12 months (after redirecting has not worked). At 12 months they are not understanding the time-out thing, but it does take them away from the situation and allows them some time and often times this then redirects their attention. At 12 months they are sitting next to me (not on my lap or in a time-out spot). I have a 17 month old right now that all I have to do is ask her if she wants a time-out and she stops what she is doing. So that tells you they understand. Around 16-18 months I start doing the time-out spot in a certain spot that is away from toys, people, TV, etc. So it becomes more of a time-out and they need to sit for 1 min. and are put back and time started over if they get up. It takes only a few time outs of them getting up before they realize that they must stay in that spot until I say it is ok to get out.

My mother in law is the same way. She thinks that my 20mnt old is too young for time out spot. Do what you think is right for your child i started at a year and now when i give him the warning he says no spot and usually corrects his behavior. He is old wnough to do the crime and the time. Just remind him after the time why he was there because memories at this age are not that good...Good Luck

He's old enough to know. Just make sure you are doing the time out immediately after the inappropriate behavior occurs. If you wait then he may not understand. Also, keep him there only one minute for each year he has been living. Your son is old enough for 1 1/2 minutes.
