My 4 Month Old Has Started Teething!! Help!

My 4 month old baby boy has started teething and it seems like the ONLY thing he has any interest chewing on are his hands. Both of his hands are red and rough. I feel so bad because it looks like it hurts, but it doesn't seems to bother him when I touch them. I've tried to put baby oil and lotion on them, but he gets mad when I don't let him chew on his hands. So here's my question: Is this just something I should let him continue doing until he grows out of it, or is there something I can do?

This is a very typical baby thing, and not necessarily teething related. His hands might be irritated from the saliva, constantly being wet with it. At this age, they usually just are discovering their hands and feet and they are their first toys- and everything from here out will go to the mouth. Perhaps something like a pacifier or toy offered when he wants to put his hands in his mouth? I'd ask your pediatrician of you think it is causing him pain.
