my kids are leaving home and I want to work again. How do I start?

My last of three kids will be leaving soon. I have not worked in more that 20 years. I was able to stay home with my kids, and they are great kids. Now I want to go back to work. I was a nurse, and I don't know how to start.

Did you keep up with your continuing education, or did you let your license run out? Do you even still want to work as a nurse? No matter what you do, start out small. Look in papers, and check out sites like or and apply for what you think would be something you would enjoy doing. There is always openings for nurses everywhere. I would suggest something that would only be a couple days to start with, just until you get the hang of it, and you confidence built up.

It can be very hard to get back in the work place, it was for me. Check around your area for an employment center, a place that helps with resumes, finding jobs, that sort of thing. Do you have an idea of the type of work you had in mind? Since you were a nurse, you might be able to get into caregiving or working with physical or mentally disabled, also with children. Also check some different jobs and look at the requirements. Don't forget to get an updated resume and references together. Good luck.
