I think it depends on how old s/he is too on how long it takes and how hard it'll be. My son slept in the bed with me until he was eight months old and I stopped breastfeeding, and I just put him in the crib. Yes, he cried, but nothing was wrong and I knew that so I left him. After two or three days he didn't cry anymore. Like Dana said, you have to be consistent though. I know CIO is controversial and a lot of people don't like it, but honestly if you know that s/he is fed and has a clean diaper, you know that s/he is just crying to cry. It hurts us more to hear them cry than it does them! Good luck!!

I hate to say this but there's no easy solution.......you just have to be firm and CONSISTENT when putting him in his own crib! If you give in once in a while even, it will confuse him! Babies like to know what to expect.....a schedule so to speak! I've always had a very distinct ' bedtime routine ' with my now 18 month old daughter! After dinner she knows it's bath time, then she used to have her bottle ( no longer has bottles so she has a bedtime snack instead with her sippy cup of water ), then we brush her teeth, and I think the most important thing that I did was always, right from day one home from the hospital was reading books to her IN HER ROOM.....after that I lay her down in her crib, cover her up with her blankets....she's got a favorite stuffy now and then I turn off the lights and walk out! Because I've alway done it this way she's never fought goin to bed!

My point is you have to be consistent and it may take anywhere from 2-3 days up to 2 weeks for him to understand but if you don't want him sleeping with you anymore ( and I'm definitely not saying there's anything wrong with that! ) then you just can't let him! A specific routine may help! I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide because it's not easy to break those habits!
