My son is almost 13 months and he sucks his thumb all the time. I know that the older they get the harder it is to stop the habit... any sugguestions?

my son Jc used to suck his thumb from the age of 3 weeks right up to 3 years! It did not bother my at all, the only reason I wanted him to stop was to prevent other kids to make fun of him when going to school.
I bought the "cutex" you get at the pharmacy for curing nail-biting and it worked like a bomb. I only had to apply it for about 2 weeks. He is now turning 5 and has not sucked his thumb since then. You just need to make sure to re-apply it every second day or as prescribed.

Good luck

some kids enjoy sucking kids in India we put neem leave paste(Neem, Indian Lilac, Margosa Tree, Nim, Crackjack, Paradise Tree, White Cedar) on a regular interval it is bitter in taste so kids realize if they suck they ll get that bitter taste so eventually they stop doing so
my sister did that with her son it helped her

I have been having this same problem with my daughter Luna. She is 8 months old and has been doing it since she was about a month old. She constantly has her thumb in her mouth. Because she sleeps with her thumb in her mouth and already has two teeth she has a swollen and blistered thumb. I have tried trying to get her to use binkies instead but nothing has worked.

putting the thumb in vinegar works as my mum did it to me i sucked my thumb till i was 10 not that that was a great thing but yea it is a comfort thing my son only sucked this thumb for the first 3days of birth but his grandmother gave him a dumby which i think is worse!! time will tell if you really dont like it use the nail polish it works aswell but so does vinegar he put his thumb to his mouth and smell it and think again.

I really don't have anything to help with him being so young but once my son turned two we told him that big boys don't suck their thumbs and reminded him. It only took a few weeks to get him to where he was catching himself.

could there be a reason he sucks? I know my youngest daughter sucked her thumb until she was about 3. She could not talk until then eather and used it as a comforting thing when ever she could not let us know what she needed or wanted. As soon as she leard some signs for eat and drink she did not do it as much then she stopped totally as she started to talk with speach therapy. I tried everything before that though (as her doc did not see a problem with her not talking or see how that could be the cause of the thumb sucking and fits). If there is no reasion that can be taken care of you can try finding the bitter nail polish. Its not harmful just tasts gross, you might have to apply it a couple times but I have heard it works. I have also heard of people puting a mitten on the hand so the little one can't get to the thumb. Hope it helps!
