Narcoleptic mommy

I had a really scary thing happen to me today, as I placed my son on his play gym, I decided to lay on the couch next to him, well that is all I remember. When I finally came to, 4 hours had passed, I felt like I just dozed off for 5 or 10 minutes, has that ever happened to any of you, and if so did you seek medical attention? I'm just afraid that something bad could have happened and not feel a thing. Help.

Have you had this happen to you before you had your baby? I have narcolepsy. I have had symptoms for years, starting in my teens. I think you are probably just exhausted from lack of sleep and need a good night's rest. I have a 7 week old and my narcolepsy is better because of the broken up sleep. (It improved after I had my first child too.) My mother also is narcoleptic and her experience after having babies was the same.

Good luck and get some rest.

When my son was about 2 or 3 months old I put him in his bassinet next to me on the couch and thought I'd just take a "cat nap" while he slept. 2 hours later I woke up to his screaming! I felt horrible! How long did he cry? OMG I'm a bad mother! My poor baby! I'm neglecting him! ETC. Simple fact is, I was just exhausted! When my husband got home and I told him what had happened, he was a sweetheart and took over and told me to go to bed. For the first time since my son was born, I slept all night, without interruption because hubby got up in the night as well...and the next day, after a cup of coffee, I could do anything! It's not narcolepcy in my's exhaustion. Get some rest girl!

I would be scared too and I think that this is something that probably happens to a lot of new moms. Usually it's just a sign that you are overtired, especially if you are still getting up in the middle of the night for feedings. Be careful about laying down like that in the future. I would always wait and lay down after putting my son in his crib for his nap. I would turn the monitor up loud so that I could hear him when he woke up. I also set the alarm for 2 hours knowing that he usually slept for 2 1/2. I would definitely talk to a doctor IF the problem continues or get worse. I didn't have to seek medical help since the situation was never a problem once I caught up on my sleep. My husband use to take over morning baby duty on the weekends so that I could sleep late and that helped me a lot! Once my son started sleeping through the night I started sleeping more normally myself and that's when I really started feeling better. Please take care of yourself and best wishes to you.
