Need suggestions for 17 mo old who climbs out of crib. Crib tent or toddler bed?

My 17 mo son started climbing out of his bed. I took off the bumper, but now he just falls when he gets out! Someone suggested the crib tent, but I thought maybe he should just have a toddler bed low to the floor. Then I read that they should be closer to 3 to move to a toddler bed so he will be more mature. I don't want him roaming the house but I think I would hear him get up. What do you think?

Laura i feel you pain my 18 month old does the same thing..My son comes straight to our room and at that time we put him back in bed. In a few weeks he will be getting a toddler bed because im afraid he is going to get hurt when he falls out of his crib. 3 of my children where all in toddler beds at the age of 1, they are happy heathly and dont get out of their beds.
So as far as putting him in a toddler bed please do what you think is best for your baby.

We had a crib that transitioned to a toddler bed you just took the fron part off. That was perfect for him. He was around year when we did that. We also had a jack and jill bathroom so we could hear him when he woke up we just made sure his door was closed and things were out of his way and safe for him if he woke up.

What do you feel more comfy with. I myself have NEVER see the crib tents.
Well for me with my 13 yr old she went to a toddler bed around 2 because I needed it for the next one. My 11, 10 & 9 yr olds all went to a twin size bed after they figured out how to climb out of their cribs. They all did fine and none of them ever wandered the house in the middle of the night. My 3 yr old NEVER tried to crawl out of her crib, but then again she NEVER had the chance to. Her crib was recalled when she was around 18 months or so. When we took her recalled crib in we got her a toddler bed instead. She also has had no problems with wandering in the middle of the night.

My daughter is 18 months and is just beginning to try to climb out of her crib. We are moving her to a toddler bed instead of the crib tent because she is skinny and her leg fits thru the bars and then she tends to get stuck, LOL!

I put my daughter in a toddler bed about that age. Before I did that I turned the crib around so the taller side is not facing the wall. It helped for about 5 months when it stoped helping I put her in a toddler bed. She did better in the toddler bed when it came to sleeping and I loved the fact that I could hear her when she got up. Se is now four and she is in a big kid bed.

hes ready for a toddler bed, i moved my little boy to a toddler bed at 2 years old. i wished i wouldve done it sooner. u could shut his door so u know u will hear him get up, i sit with my baby until he falls asleep and then when my husband goes to bed he opens his door, ryley wakes me up whenever he gets up.

My 4 yr and 2 yr were out of the crib by 1 yr because I had another one needing the crib. I didn't put up gate to keep them in their room, I would just sing them a song, read a book, kiss them good night and shut the door. Sometimes I would find them asleep on the floor and have to put them back in but for the most part they stayed in bed. Once they were asleep I would open the door so I could hear them during the night..... my room is also right across the hall and they will wander in during the night to sleep with us if they have a bad dream etc.

It sounds to me like he is very independent so i would put him in a toddler bed. My daughter was in her toddler bed from 18 months and she is now in a big girls bed and she sleeps through and doesn't cry to be in bed with me or anything. Its the best thing I have done for her as she feels much more grown up.x

I would put him in a toddler bed. He will be closer to the floor. You can also get one of those bed gates to keep him from rolling out. Keep baby monitor on at night, to hear if he is up and moving around. Keep his door closed. You don't want him wandering around or falling downstairs.

toddler bed it seems like alot of work at first but it will pay off in the end. we got a firetruck bed which has high sides to keep them from falling out but is also fun so the think sleeping in it is like sleeping in a toy. now it will be hard because we switched back in november and i still have to make him stay in the bed but its alot better than it was before.

My son is 18 months old and we just moved him to a toddler bed. It is really hard work to get them to stay in bed, but I think it's worth it. It has taken my son 2 weeks to really adjust to the new bed. The first week was hours of putting him back in bed. This week hasn't taken near as long. A few times and he'll stay in the bed. He still tries to get out of bed and roam in the mornings, but i always hear him and go get him.

After much debate, research, thought and opinions we went with converting to toddler bed. Worried for nothing. He slept like he always did and loves it. Feels proud I think. Thanks for the help!

I moved my son to a toddler bed at 15 months and never had a problem with him roaming the house or getting out of bed. I just taught him not go go getting into stuff and he really has never done it and he is three. The most he does is come into our room and wake us up.

Hi! My 15 month old is in a toddler bed for this same reason! I would much rather him fall onto the floor from a low toddler bed than fall from his crib! We never used a tent, just went right to the toddler bed. Hope this helps :)

i switchd my daughter to a toddler bed about that age and installed a gate... only now shes almost 3 and figgured out how to open the gate when its locked and not unlock it.

Definitely crib tent. When Nico, who is now three was that age I switched to a toddler bed for the same reason. It was a disaster and then I read that if they are climbing out it's a bad time to switch, they're not ready. My second Ty, just starting doing it too at 17 months. I bought the crib tent this time and it worked like a charm! A day of anger and resistance towards it and then he was fine! And now when I moved I took it off and was to lazy to put it back on the first night, so I decided to see what he'd do without it and he went right to sleep. But it of course always depend on the kid and your level of patience. I didn't feel like doing the super nanny method of putting him back constantly so now I am stuck laying down with Nico to go to sleep. Ty, I will probably have tough love with both of them at the same time and teach them both to go to bed on their own using the super nanny method.
