Nightmares or crying at night?

My 4 yr old has been waking up lately once a night /few times a week crying hysterically. He can never tell us what is wrong. I can't really tell if he is awake or aware. Sometimes the next morning he remembers us coming in but he doesn't know why he was crying. I am wondering if it is nightmares and is this normal? He doesn't watch scary things on TV and we don't read scary books so I'm wondering where all this is coming from?

Both my 4 and 5 year old just come in stating they can't sleep or they had a bad dream. They curl up on a blanket on our floor and just goes back to sleep.

My 5 yr old does this except she doesn't cry hysterical just more whinning and moving around. She will tell me she had a bad dream but cannot explain it or will just tell us she can't fall asleep.

I have read that between the ages of 2 to 6-Night Terrors are common along with just Nightmares. I have been reading up on it and supposably they are different. It usually peaks around ages 3-4.
