Nine year old potty mouth.

My son loves being funny and making people laugh. But lately has been making jokes about things he does not even understand. He knows about basic reproduction, but not homosexuality and slang. Does anyone have scripture references or advice. I don't just want to say don't say these things because I said so. I want to teach him that it is displeasing to God.

I would talk about what is an appropriate thing to talk about and what is not appropriate. When I taught 3rd grade I constantly had to have this talk with my students.

have him sit down with a priest or someone at your church and explain to him why it is wrong. coming from someone else might make a bigger impact on him! good luck:D

Hi Michelle. Kids these days are lerning things so quickly we can't keep up at all! I have a 7 and 5 and 3 yr old who learn words from their 2 teenaged sisters. Not always appropriate of course. But I think all you can do is be cautious of what your son is watching with you and aware of what he is when not with you. Does he has friends that talk the same way? I can remember saying words and not knowing at all what they meant but got attention from them anyways. Nine is a tough age because they are testing more than ever the limits. I would suggest not "guilting" him that it's dipleasing to God but maybe say that what you say at times is not appropriate and he wouldn't want to offend anyone around him-including God if need be. Reassuring him that he is not a bad person for saying whatever he says but the choice of words is not good. I'm sure you'll handle this just fine:-)
