NOT retunring to work after Maternity Leave?

[deleted account] ( 5 moms have responded )

I am supposed to go back to work this February 22nd 2010 and we have decided that I am not going to go back until my daughter goes to school.

Does anyone know how or when I should let my employer know about this? ( I am in Ontario, Canada. )

& if there are any sort of penalizations ( like I have to re-pay the money back or go to work and then quit etc. )

Great!!! You are going to have so much fun with your little one! I don't know the rules for Canada, but if you can afford to do it then go for it. I plan in 4yrs after my youngest goes to school is to become a school bus driver. Then you get the same days off as your children. Plus, the pay isn't too bad and our school has a penalty system that if there is a trouble maker on the bus he can get kicked off the bus. So you don't have to deal with misbehaving kids. That or as you might take some classes to be an admin for the school. Just food for thought!

I live in Alberta and I didn't get mat leave but a friend of mine did for a year and she didn't go back. There was no penalty and I think she just let him know a few weeks before.

I lucked out when I decided not to go back as the company I worked for was closing the site I worked at before I had to go back anyway. What I was told by the HR people where I worked was that you just don't go back, but they appreciated that I gave them a month notice anyway.

I've been thinking about the same thing though my maternity leave doesn't start until March 1, 2010 and will end around around late May early June 2010. I was going to give the normal two weeks notice though a month notice is a very good idea. Thank you for the thought. :-)

When I decided to not go back after having my first, I let my employer know about a month before I was due back. There are no penalties, you just don't go back.
